Years ago, I actually worked in-house for a short time at the nonprofit To Write Love on Her Arms. Their work in the mental health space has been impacting lives all over the globe for years, and it was truly a privilege to be in the trenches with them for a while. I learned so much, and made life-long friends along the way.
One of those friends is Dustin Miller. While he’s never been an employee at TWLOHA, he’s been helping them tell the most important stories since before I ever came on the scene. One day over the summer he called me up and asked if I wanted to join him in helping create something for TWLOHA’s 2023 World Suicide Prevention Day campaign, “The World Is Not Better Without You.”
The topic is never easy. The visuals are always a delicate dance. And striking a balance between honest and hopeful is continuously at risk. And yet I’m so grateful to be able to contribute to the conversation. I hope these pieces remind people that they are loved and worthy of living. Their presence makes the world better, and I hope they stay.
